Picasa 3 from Google will do this easily. Its a basic but good image editing program and its free.
It organises your photos too. Just select the one you want and Click on 'effects' on the left hand tabs.
For B%26amp;W you have 3 choices;
- straightforward B%26amp;W
- filtered B%26amp;W - this is where you can simulate the effect of filters over a B%26amp;W image
- focal B%26amp;W - this turns the image B%26amp;W apart from a central portion that retains colour - you can determine how much stays in colour with a simple slider controlHow do you make photos black and white on the computer?
I use Ilford XP2 and scan it with a Epson V500. Sometimes I do minor contrast adjustments and that is it.
I have Photoshop Elements 6.0 but used 2.0 for years. It will work fine.
Hi Ellie, try this www.paint.net it's a free application, and very easy and straight forward to use, when you use it go to 'effects' there nare various different ones you can use, one of them is black and white, there is also sepia, negative etc. if you have any probs just mail me through Y/A. Good luck.
If you're using Windows it has a graphic package built in. I'm using XP and this is where it is:
Go to Start %26gt; Programs %26gt; Assessories %26gt; Paint
Once Paint is running drag a copy (in case you mess up or don't like it) of your photo to Paint's window and then select the 'Image' menu option at the top, then down to 'Attribute' and select the 'Black and White' radio button (bottom left of the box). Save it if you like it.
Other graphics packages can do it also.
It's hard to answer your question without knowing the specifics of the software you are using.
If your budget permits, I recommend purchasing Adobe Photoshop Elements - a very powerful image editing package that's under $100. However, About.com has a nice listing of free photo editing software, which is described at this link: http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/pixelbasedwin/tp/freephotoedw.htm
With most photo editing software, it's pretty easy to convert color images to B%26amp;W. If the creation of a good quality B%26amp;W image is your goal, you'll need to acquire some info. on how to optimize these conversions for the type of mood and message you want to convey in your final image. In other words, there's more to doing this than clicking a few buttons. Contrast, shadows, highlight detail, etc., are among the various parameters that should be considered and the more powerful image editors have a plethora of ways to make these adjustments.
As both a photographer and electronics technician I can tell you two ways:
1. turn the color off on your monitor.
2. convert the image to grayscale in paint (again, removing color).
.
I have never heard of ';photoshop starter kit'; but it sounds like a version of Elements that is included with many digital devices. I cannot believe it does not have the capability of a simple black and white conversion.
Try this. Bring your photo into the program. Look up at the toolbar. There should be a tab that says ';Image';. Under that should be a selection that says MODE. Out from that should be a selection that says ';Greyscale';. Click on that for b/w
Also, you can try this. Under Image, drop down to ';Adjustments';. Out from that select Hue / Saturation. When the box opens, drag the Saturation slider all the way to the left to remove color.
Either of those methods should be available in any kind of photoshop application.
Neither of those are truly good methods of doing b/w conversion, but likely the only options you have.
