You need to change the settings in Photoshop. Usually, when you open in file in black and white, photoshop mode sets itself to grayscale. To change it to RGB color, go to Image, Mode, and then find RGB color on the menu. The photo will remain black and white, but anything you paint onto the image will be in color. How to change color in photos that are already black and white in Photoshop cs4?
You cannot. There is NOT RGB data in those files. All the colour data has been either discarded when the conversion was made or not was ever captured (if you shot the original using the Monochrome mode in your cameras menu options..

You will have to go back to the original RGB file and using layers, make any modification you wish there and then convert specific layers to get what you want.

This is perhaps the most compelling reason to always shoot in RGB, converting to black and white later using Photoshop or other full featured photo retouching program.

Methods you an use to later create a black and white image file from an original RGB file.

In camera retouching

Consult your user guide for your cameras options.

In Photoshop

Option 1 Image %26gt; Mode %26gt; Grayscale

Option 2 Image %26gt; Adjustments %26gt; Hue/Saturation %26gt; set Saturation to -100. Image %26gt; Adjustments %26gt; Levels %26gt; set black threshold, white threshold and adjust mid-tones to taste

When adding colour back to the RGB channels you will have the option of using either pure Red, Green or Blue or other selected combinations of RGB in each of the channels. Getting back to the original color values however will be difficult if not impossible.
